Imagine Life without Digital: A Class Survey due Dec. 1, 2009

There are 2 parts for this on-line survey. Please answer via the comments section before the start of our Marketing class,  Dec. 1, 6pm.

First describe yourself digitally ie. what you are like as far as how you use mobile phones, internet and hardware/software.

Second, answer this question: What would happen if you have 1 whole month of not having internet access and no mobile phone? Would you feel like Tom Hanks on Castaway?

In your answers to the 2  questions, you can include pictures, hyperlinks to youtube, images, blogs, websites to further add value, impact and heart to your thoughts.

As promised, I always give a sample to any class activity. So please click on the word "comments" (which appears right after the time 6:20 PM) below to post your own comment. When you click "comments", a pop-up window opens, you can place your comments;  also choose to identify yourself with your google ID.  (The first 2 sample comments I made show how this is done.)

I am the first contamination marketer. (www.contaminationmarketing.com)
In the last 6 months, I have created more than 30 blogs in blogger, wordpress, multiply, tumbler and webofficelive.
The results: I optimized my search results for my personal brand, sold 2 cars, launched 2 events, connected with 500 professionals, completed 2 US based BPO projects and taught 2 MBA marketing classes. More at
www.josephdeungria.com

Without mobile cellphones and the internet for 1 month, I will probably spend more time at home with my family and actually be talking with them instead of spending hours facing this computer screen. I will also be penniless and bored by around 3 pm of each day.

I am a moderate tech person. When I say moderate, I mean, I am not totally dependent on the internet or my laptop to be able to go about with my daily task. When i use my internet, I usually just visit three sites. my emails, facebook, and nba.com. the third not being frequented as much during the off season. when it comes to cellphones, i see it as a convenient way of contacting other people, yet i dont use it for browsing not any other internet functions. basically its a convenient way of reaching the targeted people.

now, imagine life without a cellphone and internet.... i would most probably be spending plenty of my time in the gym or basketball court or the beach!!!!! or maybe having more time with my nephews and nieces... playing with them and watching them flash their innocent smiles.... =)

I wouldn't call myself an overly techie person, although I do enjoy the challenge of figuring out how a new device works. In this digital age, I cant go without my cellphone, mp3 player and my computer. These 3 devices are what I expose myself to each day. I do keep myself updated with the social networking websites and the occasional blogs but I wouldn't call myself obsessive to the point where I would update my status every minute. I use the internet frequently to check my emails and to chat.

Now if I imagined life without internet and computers and cellphones. Firstly I'd probably be out of a job, because doing graphics requires me to be on the computer almost all the time. 2nd life will be in a much slower pace, not to mention less stress, I would probably have more time to paint or draw. 3rd I'd probably be out of friends.. for most of my friends are overseas and snail mail just takes too long compared to emails or just a quick sms.

I would say that I am right now a digitally dependent person. Sad to say that I didn’t choose to be one but it is a requirement for my job. Being in the field of Information Technology I would say it is a prerequisite. Being on the cutting edge of the technology is one of the mandates that were given to us that we have to follow. Right now we are focusing on mobility which digital technology plays a major role. Having to access your emails anywhere and doing work related transactions are today’s key objective of mobility, may it be by laptop or a mobile device.
In the second question what would happen if I don’t have an internet access for a month? I think a lot of things would be lost, that includes my job. Because our primary responsibility is to see to it that all applications are available to our users and that includes emails, applications and internet access. But personally, it would really make a difference because admittedly I’m much to dependent to it right now. Being in that situation I think would be like detaching myself to the world.

I am a moderate user of technology. By moderate, I mean that I appreciate all that technology has to offer, but I don't go crazy over all new advances in technology which seems to come every second of every day. I use my computer primarily to work, and the internet for work, homework, facebook, and to check my email. I hardly open my computer for any other reason. My main weakness in technology would be my cellphone. It's so convenient that everybody (with cellphones) is just a text/call away.

If I were to live without cellphones and internet for a month, I would feel very out of touch and frustrated because I can't contact my family or friends whenever I want. I'd actually have to go back to using the telephone, hehe! I guess even if I don't consider myself a tech junkie, I'd still be lost without the comforts that technology offers.

I am not a techy guy. i mean, not for my embarrassment I DONT REALLY USE THE COMPUTER THAT MUCH...Before !I always relied on calls using my mobile phone, I still ask the "not so" workaholic employee to deliver documents such as contracts and provisional receipt for me.

For the record my bill in SMART TELECOMS reach an all time high of Php 31,357.45 ( I am sure because I checked my bill prior to posting a comment )My God, that really knocked off my lucidity. Well it paid off because a month after SMART called and they upgraded me to their Infinity Plan....(I thought they were offering me an internment or funeral plan---because what I have paid, I knew and i learned is worth one casket or a lot at Loyola memorial park.)Add to this, the " not so workaholic " guy also misses, sometimes even loosing docs in transit.....Of course the fax is also there... if the fax tone comes along with it...( or if does... the secretary, of the other party I wish to convey the docs doesn't have the " brain -tone "

ZERO UPDATED KNOWLEDGE in technology, that was my predicament. My cp is the only mark of civilization for me... the rest of the hightech things others claim to be useful belonged for so long only in my SUBCONSCIOUS MIND....( that was what Sigmund Freud said... ) Internet was only useful for me when I relax... ( That's when I watch the porn... sorry for being truthful )
MP3... I had my chance, music I loved it, but I always complain, because, my fingers are to bulky that I always press the wrong button, actually my mother bought it for me ( she said I must enjoy the fruits of my work ),alright... but it ended in the wrong place... I was preparing for a catering function when it slipped and joined the group of dancing chicken legs and thighs. The MP3 got fried up !

LIFE IS LONELY WITHOUT SOMEBODY.THOUGH I CANT BE WITH EVERYBODY PHYSICALLY AT THE SAME-

I LEARNED THRU THE MARKMA CLASS THAT THERE ARE WAYS PALA TO AT LEAST GET IN TOUCH WITH THEM.
THE INTERNET IS TRULY ONE POWERFUL TOOL I HAVE DISCOVERED THAT CAN OPEN MORE DOORS FOR EFFICIENCY. NOW AT a FIXED COST OF LESS THAN A THOUSAND PER MONTH I CAN SEND MY DOCS VIA EMAIL, I CAN EVEN PRESENT MY PROPOSALS ON LINE...( no need for the "not so workaholic guy" )
It is starting to revolutionize the way I do business....as well as my teaching. My students in UM were shocked because the assignments are now to be downloaded and their reports need to be uploaded. No more manila papers, projectors and the like...I saw the potential of technology and how it can improve the quality of my business and professional affairs and the way of living I sometimes take for granted...

I started to study how it works, spend night and even morning to figure it out, patiently answering the requirement s of Prof. de Ungria ( yeahh..for a starter it eats alot of my time... )

IT WILL PAY-OFF I KNOW...
THE study of technology as I discerned,is an EVOLUTIONARY TASK t AND THE EFFECTS ARE REVOLUTINARY....

What will happen if, for one month the internet is taken away from me or my cp ?... Well that will bring me back to inefficient conduct of my affairs...more costs on doing business and more errors by the "not so workaholic guy". That will bring my students to the old-fashion way of learning and probably not give him hope to better themselves and their practices.

Personally, that will deprive me of youtube, bit torrent, movies on line.....and the rest of the fun....

AS GARY VALENCIANO ONCE SAID....

" TAKE ME OUT OF THE DARK...MY LORD !

I'm an internet junkie. I'm online most of the day (at home and in the office). The first thing I do when I get to work is check my personal mail, Facebook, and a couple of news sites that I frequent. I only start working after browsing these sites :) I'm also a part time web developer so it requires me to be online even when I'm at home. Recent sites that I have created are www.travelista.com.ph (for our travel agency) and www.travelista.com.ph/monica (personal website required for our E-commerce class). I always bring my laptop when traveling / going on vacations as I cannot stand being offline for more than a couple of days. As for my mobile phone usage, I don't have a fancy phone so I only use it for sending text messages and making calls.

If I didn't have internet access for one whole month, my work and
personal mails would probably have thousands of unread messages and it would take me several days to sort through them. I would also feel isolated since I communicate with most of my friends through Yahoo messenger / Facebook. I also check the news online so I'd probably be unaware of what's happening around me. However, if I didn't have internet access, I would be reading books and spending more quality time with my friends and family.

1. I still consider myself as a moderate user of Internet and mobile phones. I just go online for research and news. I text or call someone when needed. It’s good to know advance features on latest gadgets in order not to be left behind.

2. Everything would be slower on my part if I don’t have Internet access and mobile phone for 1 month but I won’t feel like Tom Hanks though. I can still use other forms of communications (snail mail, landline, telegraph). I just have to be resourceful.

Believe it or not, we do not have internet access in our office because our president believes that it is a major "distraction" in completing our everyday tasks. Those who have the privilege of having an internet access (which they need in completing their tasks) have limited access to the websites that they can visit. Since I am still working in my 1st job since I graduated college, I haven't been that dependent on the internet compared to others. And even if I can easily surf thru the internet thru my iPhone since last year, whenever there's a WiFi around, I would still always choose to read a good book than spend time "online" (I am a self-confessed bookworm btw). Even if I am not a very techy person, I still always look forward to having the latest gadgets available in the market and trying it out for myself even if unfortunately I don't use my gadgets very often.

If ever I'll be stuck in an island for a month without my mobile phones, my laptop, internet and my other digital gadgets... I think I'll be able to survive pretty well as long as I have all my pending (22) books to read which I bought during our bonuses this year, and of course if I'm with my special someone in the island, I'll be okay na! =)
We both need the rest and the relaxation that the one-month quiet and serene vacation on a beautiful beach can offer us.

1. Being in the mobile industry, it is quite the norm in our company to be techie. In fact, one would probably be left out if not technologically sound. Unlike other offices, our office allows access to any and all websites, all day everyday. I myself am online almost all of my waking hours (18 hours), minus time spent on the road. Work (email, chat, research) and social activities (social networking, chat, email) are almost all online.

2. Without mobile phones and internet for 1 month, I would probably feel very empty, short of going crazy. This would force me to go back to basics and make calls using the landline, meeting with business partners face to face, and going out with friends more often.

I must say i am a moderate user of phone and internet (and other technology gadgets) as i still prefer face-to-face contact with people. I only use the internet for social networking, emails, and bank transactions. Though i use our company's pc most of the time, that is because i needed it for work. As regards to cellphones, i cannot use it much often because im pre-occupied by work and school.

If these gadgets won't be present, i believe it would be very difficult especially when you're using these for work or as a necessity. I must say i'll be with my family and friends more often if these gadgets are not present. Perhaps, sometimes these technologies can interfere with the real bonding we should have with our loved ones. So without these, believe i can bond more with my family and friends.

I would say that I am just a moderate user of technology. At work, though we are in front of our computers almost all the time, only our office emails and intranet sites are available for use, giving us only limited access to the internet. At home, I mainly use the internet to check my emails, do some research for homework, read the news and visit my facebook or multiply account. However, I do bring my digital camera most of the time because I love having pictures whenever I’m hanging out with friends or travelling. As for mobile phones, I don’t really need a fancy phone because I only use them for urgent calls and sending text messages to friends. Believe it or not, I could still stick to my P300 cellphone load per month. ☺

If I would not have internet access and mobile phone for one month, then I would have to go back to the basics such as using the landline to catch up with friends, buying and reading the newspaper, etc.. This would also allow me to spend quality time with my family and friends, do more errands at home, maybe have more time to read books or just travel with friends for a much needed relaxation and fun.

With all the available technology today, I must say that I am most fascinated with the internet world. Thus, I can be classified as an avid internet surfer. I do not look for much in mobile phones, but I always put preference in a good quality computer and fast internet access. I'm just amazed with all of the information present in the internet and how interconnected everyone is. Because of these, I always log on to twitter and facebook to stay in touch with my relatives and friends. I've also bought music equipments on eBay. Aside from this, I surf the internet until the wee hours of the morning reading news articles, wikipedia articles, and various sports and entertainment sites.

I would feel bewildered and left out at first if I did not have internet access and a mobile phone for a month. Because of my regular habit of checking my accounts and favorite site visits, I would feel outdated if I don't get to go online in a month. On the brighter side, I would have more time to spend with my family and friends.

I wouldn't say that I'm a techie-guy, but I do have my fair share of love for gadgets. They're simply fun and interesting to explore. My mobile phone is a very basic one --it's more of because they break too easily with my handling (sayang naman!) than having technophobia. I see the internet as sort of a way to pass time and somewhat de-stress. It's also a great venue to find information almost about anything.

I can live by without internet. I'll probably spend my time playing basketball or learning new sports. Without my mobile phone, it'll just be a whole lot more difficult to get in touch with people, but it's not something I'll go crazy about.

Over the past 5 years, I have become more and more dependent on technology. I would consider myself a bit techie but not really the hard core geeky programmer type. I use the internet and mobile phones for school, work and entertainment. I take advantage of online bills payment and I could easily get information from people with a few seconds of using the phone. Technology has made life easier and “faster” for me. Technology has definitely become part of my “needs” in life but every now and then, I remind myself that these things should not take full control of my life.

My most recent realization of how my life would be if I get "unplugged" was the time Ondoy struck. Being trapped in a place without electricity and intermittent phone signal was very frustrating. If I won’t be able to access the internet for a long period of time, this would mean that my virtual settlements (www.kingsage.org and www.ikariam.org) would be run over by my virtual enemies. My fantasy NBA team would probably drop to last place. Other than these, there are no real worries; I’ll probably end up watching reruns of CSI. Then again, I would still have to go out of the house to pay my electric bill and buy DVDs.

i think i am a moderate user of technology, mostly because i have a cellphone, have access to the internet (which i only recently had via a broadband connection at home), and a general grasp of what's new and hot in the market. however, i am not as eager to explore what these technologies can do for me. for example, i use my mobile phone, which i got for free from my subscriber, for basic stuff like texting or calling and for the occasional internet browsing via GPRS. of course, there's also the camera capability which i rarely use.

i admit i could do a lot more exploring. but i haven't really had the chance or haven't found real excitement in doing so.

without mobile phones or the internet for a month, i could probably have more time doing my arts--like go back to painting, writing or learn new skills. i am sure i can find something to do, like read a book, go around town (walking at a leisurely pace), spend time with my family and friends, eat somewhere different everyday... explore! however, it would be a terrible thing not to be able to communicate with people who are far away and with whom i communicate regularly via text, call or instant messaging. so if i didnt have phone or internet, they'd all be with me and spend that 1 month together.

I would say that i am a techie person. I cannot live without the internet. Maybe because the same is critical in my work. I cannot move forward without the internet. And when i get stressed, to ralex myself, what i do is surf the internet like go to social networking sites and keep in touch with my friends. In terms of mobile phones, since college, i have had the latest models of mobile phones. I don't mind spending much on phones.

I would feel incomplete if i have no internet access and mobile phones. These 2 have made my life easier in terms of getting easily in touch with my loved ones. I became very dependent of them. For me they bridge the communication gap between me and the people around me.

I am not a techie person. I’m okay with the basics – cellphone & computer. I use email a lot at work and I would go online from time to time to check my facebook account and see what people are up to or visit whatever site interests me.

Digital has changed the way we live life in so many ways. With today’s technology, almost everything is just a click away. Digital has made connecting with other people a lot easier, but we can also see that the quality of human relationships has changed. Nowadays, we find it hard to communicate especially with the younger generation because most of the time, they would have earphones plugged in their ears as they listen to music in their ipods or mp3 players. So, if there were no cellphones and computers, I’d probably have more quality time with family and friends, or maybe I could organize photo albums or read more books. Imagining life without digital is like having a handful of true friends, rather than hundreds of contacts in Multiply or Facebook.

I must admit that having the techie things is something I, personally, am in to. Phones, PCs, PSP, DSLR, etc. are indeed something to covet but check out the premium and the pocket's capacity.

In utilizing these techie things, I must say, I am in the moderate stage. I find it very effective to be able to access the web using my phone as I am always on the go. On the down grade, finding a wifi hotspot is trouble some and network premiums and connection/signal is sometimes irritating. Video calling is a very effective technology for reaching out and stablishing personal attachments. Being able to use the phone as an oversized flash drive is sweet without the wires. Having everything in one device is the sweetest thing; music, video, file downloads, file saving, games, camera, etc. Its always a great thing to have an efficient DSLR, as it could turn out to be an income generating technological and splurgy investment. Oh yes, investment - a process of shedding out your hard earned cash for something that could generate an income. Though sometimes in this sense, its just an extra or additional income that could cover for some lifestyle needs.

Despite the sweet capabilities of these tech toys, I must admit, I can live without them as long as I have my surfboard...that is, if tech toys werent invented at all. Living without them for a month or so... i'll be fine. living without them for a year knowing that i could have them... i think it'd go eat up my mind even if i have my board.
Gaining information is almost as important as the air you breath these days and its what these toys deliver and thank god for creating "genyo" creatures in this world.

There was a saying decades ago that went: "The telephone is there for your convenience, not the caller's."

I've always gone by this saying when it comes to the internet and cellphones: it is there for my benefit primarily, and the rest secondarily.

Because of work and personal interests, I have come to rely on the internet and cellphones to keep in touch with those I need to, keep abreast of information that are important to me. However if one month would go by without them, as long as my coworkers, MBA colleagues and family members know, I could definitely go without it.

I'm not the type of person to live and breathe on every single text or await each email. Though modern times necessitate I have these technologies, the old-school person in me still allow me at times, live otherwise.

With regards to hardware, I tend to update myself with the latest hardware technology in the market.

I would feel like Tom Hanks in Castaway if I have no access to internet or mobile phones for one month. Like him, I would do my imaginary Wilson as a friend to talk to. I would probably loose my job if I don’t get access to them. I will have a boring month and would stay at home and watch movies all day with my imaginary Wilson. I would probably loose some friends as they would always talk to me everyday.
